Reach for the Stars

When the cosmic Ebert & Roeper review the “Twilight Zones” of the galaxies, how many of ours will make their top ten?

“What you are about to see is a matter of human record. Explain it: we cannot. Disprove it: we cannot. We simply invite you to explore with us the amazing world of the Unknown… to take that One Step… Beyond.”

Premiering January 20, 1959, “One Step Beyond” and shows that followed like “The Outer Limits” fed the nation’s growing interest in the paranormal and extraterrestrial.

The unexplained has always compelled us — demanding our attention like a flash of enlightenment on the verge of discovery. No wonder it remains the subject of so much that comes out of Hollywood and the networks. But how do the recent offerings compare to the classics of yesterday? Are there any good enough to stand the test of time?

Well, yes. One of my favorites is the network television series “Medium.” Patricia Arquette plays Allison DuBois, a gifted psychic with the extraordinary ability to see into the past and predict the future.

I am also a big fan of the movie “Contact.” Jodie Foster plays Dr. Eleanor Arroway in a very smart portrayal of our inevitable discovery of, and contact with, extraterrestrial life.

“You ever feel the prickly things on the back of your neck?” A list of all-time great films would not be complete without including “The Sixth Sense.” Haley Joel Osment plays a sad boy troubled by visions of the dead.

So when our extraterrestrial Ebert & Roeper see the best we have to offer, will they get us, or will the message be lost in the background noise of the universe?

In the end, all I can say is …

Veringa! Gort! Veringa!! Klaatu barata nikto!
